  • 4/2 Meeting - John DiPietro
    xx This week, April 2, noted motivational speaker, John DiPietro will be speaking at Wellesley Kiwanis. The topic will be The Power of One and how one person can make a big difference in the reputation and efficiency of an organization.  Based in the Boston area, John is the author of YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE PERFECT TO BE GREAT and speaks world-wide to companies and trade associations about increasing their productivity.
  • 4/9 Meeting - Michael Dowling
    Michael Dowling On Thursday, April 9th, WCVB-TV channel 5 sports reporter Mike Dowling will be speaking at the Wellesley Kiwanis. Mike is a Wellesley resident and moderator of the Wellesley Spelling Bee.

    Since joining SportsCenter 5 in December, 1985, Mike has provided extensive coverage of the Red Sox, Celtics and Patriots from spring training to post-season playoff games to Super Bowls. He has served as the station's weekend sports anchor. He has also co-anchored three Emmy Award-winning sports specials for WCVB and won three Associated Press Awards for Best Sports Feature of the Year.

    In addition to being actively involved with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for 15 years, Mike works with the Special Olympics and helps to raise funds for the Ronald McDonald House.

      Speaking at Wellesley Kiwanis this week is Paul Bruchez who will be speaking on New Orleans and the after math of Hurricane Katrina.

      Dr. Roseanna Means, founder of Women of Means, believes that society’s neediest women and children deserve accessible and compassionate health care, and should not have to sacrifice scarce cash, safety, warmth and food to get basic medical help. Dr. means has appeared on 'Sunday Morning with Liz Walker’ and is featured in a Public Service Announcement from Candy O'Terry, Magic 106.7 FM.

    10/30 Meeting - Mary Doorley
    Dec Mary Doorley, Chief Development Officer of Reach Out and Read, will be speaking at the Wellesley Kiwanis on Thursday, October 30th.
    Reach Out and Read is Americas most efficient pediatric literacy program.  Last year, they gave 5.5 million books to children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years.

    Jon

    Jon Keller is WBZ-TV’s Political Analyst who will be speaking this week on May 29th at 12:15p.m. at Wellesley Kiwanis. Keller's reports are regularly featured during WBZ-TV News at 6PM and 11PM as well as on TV38 News at 9:30PM. He also broadcasts morning drive commentaries on WBZ NewsRadio 1030 and contributes weekly to The Boston Herald and monthly to Boston Magazine.

    We will have at least one copy of Jon's latest book, The Bluest State, available for raffle.

    Jim Jim Boyd, Special Correspondent for WCVB-TV Channel 5 will address the Wellesley Kiwanis Club at its Thursday, March 27th luncheon, at the Wellesley College Alumni Club.

     Boyd has been with the station since WCVB went on the air in March 1972. and has served in many roles during his tenure, most recently as the co-anchor of the Midday and EyeOpener news broadcasts, after starting as a general assignment reporter.

He will be discussing issues, the introduction of new technologies, and advance customer services related to senior living retirement communities. Mr. Burke's primary role is the oversight of LCVM, Inc. entities including the North Hill retirement campus in Needham and the development of the strategic direction for the organization.

Shind is pleased to join Kiwanis on April 12, 2007 for a talk about the pleasures of jazz.  Larry first got the jazz bug in his teens in Cincinnati, where he listened long into the night to legendary jazz DJ, Oscar Treadwell.  Larry has been a part-time jazz radio DJ for more than 20 years, and is currently the primary fill-in host for the popular weeknight program, “Jazz with Eric in the Evening”, on WGBH, 89.7 in Boston.

      The program consists of the presentation of checks to the Salvation Army by Wellesley Kiwanis as a result of the Red Kettle drive.     b Beth Furman, owner and publisher of WellesleyWeston magazine, spoke to the club. She discussed her career and the events that lead to the creation of the magazine. First published in 2004, the magazine covers such topics as home, garden, family, education, and fitness.
  • 11/9 Meeting - Speaker Joel H. Smith
    j Our speaker was Joel H. Smith, Ph.D., Executive Director of Autism Services Association (ASA) which is based in Wellesley. Joel noted that while there are many programs for Autistic youngsters, the situation changes once they reach 22 years of age. Thus one focus of ASA is to place participants in jobs within the community.

    b Our speaker on November 16th was Barbara Levitov, Marketing Manager of the Davis Museum and Cultural Center, located on the Wellesley College campus. Her presentation focused on the museum's mission and collections, some of which can be viewed on the website.

    m On November 30th, Marc Alterio spoke to the Kiwanis about programs for children's wellness. He noted that proper nutrition and exercise are not just good for children, but also lead to improved scholastic success.

    Gail Lockberg of the Wellesley Food Pantry spoke to Kiwanis on October 5th. The Pantry has seen a 40% increase in demand over the last year and now serves 140 families in town.

    Lydia Harman of Kidsave discussed her mission and organization which brings orphaned children from other countries to the US.
